What Does "Following the Melody Direction" Actually Mean?

What was the question?

A member asked for clarification on the phrase "melody gives direction." Does this mean the improvised line should go up in pitch when the melody goes up (register), or is it about voice leading?

The core idea (in plain English)

It is definitely not about register—the guitar has a limited range anyway, so we can't always follow the pitch height of a singer.

"Direction" refers to targeting the Third. In most standards (like Autumn Leaves or Misty), the melody resolves to or targets the 3rd of the chord on the strong beats. Following the melody's direction means understanding where that resolution point is—specifically the 3rd of the upcoming harmony—and aiming your improvised line to land there.

Fretboard breakdown (what to play)

  • Shell Voicings as a Guide: Look at your shell voicings (Root, 3rd, 7th).

  • Voice Leading: Notice how when you move from one shell voicing to the next (e.g., Cm7 to F7), the note that moves is usually resolving to the 3rd of the new chord.

  • The Target: That 3rd is your "melody direction." Even if you are improvising a complex line, if you land on the 3rd when the chord changes, you are "following the melody's logic."

Common mistake to avoid

Don't just play random notes from the scale until the measure is over. If you ignore the target note (the 3rd), your solo will sound like it’s floating on top of the song rather than weaving through it.

A 10-minute practice assignment

Take a ii-V-I progression. Play only the "target notes" (the 3rds of each chord) on beat 1 of every measure. Then, try to play a simple line leading up to that note. If you hit the 3rd on the downbeat, you’ll hear how powerful this "direction" is.
