The Prerequisite to Learning Tunes Without a Real Book
What was the question?
Malik asked for clarification on the "Fundamental 2" video regarding learning chord progressions by ear. He wanted to confirm the workflow: learning the melody first, then finding bass notes, and whether he should be doing this entirely by ear before using videos.

The core idea (in plain English)
The most crucial step happens before you touch the guitar. My teacher used to burn a CD of a single tune (like Someday My Prince Will Come) interpreted by different artists and tell me to listen to it for a week.
You must internalize the tune completely. Once you can sing the melody perfectly, you go to the instrument. You find the melody on the fretboard, then find the bass notes that support that melody. This relationship (Melody + Bass) tells you the harmony.

If you've felt this 'connect the scales' instinct before, see Why Connecting Scale Shapes Won't Help You Play Jazz Changes.
Fretboard breakdown (what to play)
Step 1 (No Guitar): Listen to the recording until you can sing the melody and hear the form.
Step 2 (Melody): Find the melody notes on your fretboard.
Step 3 (Bass): Find the bass notes. Sing the melody while searching for the bass note that happens on beat 1.
Step 4 (Voicing): Once you have the melody (top) and bass (bottom), the "shell" or inner workings of the chord become much easier to identify or choose based on your taste.

Common mistake to avoid
Do not try to learn a tune by looking at a chord chart first. If you memorize a chart (Am7 - D7 - Gmaj7), you are memorizing data, not sound. If you get lost on stage, you have no anchor. If you know the melody and how the bass moves with it, you are never truly lost.
A 10-minute practice assignment
Pick a standard you want to learn. Put your guitar away. Find 3 different recordings of that song (e.g., vocal version, piano trio, guitar). Listen to them on repeat for 10 minutes. Try to sing the melody along with them. Do not try to figure out the chords yet—just own the melody.
