How Do You Get the Altered Sound Without the Altered Scale?
Play the shape a half step above, then resolve down. That's the whole trick. Every altered tension on a dominant chord — b9, #9, b13 — lives inside an upper structure sitting a half step above your target, and when you slide that familiar shape down into the resolution, the "altered scale sound" appears without a single scale being practiced. How does the half-step approach work?
Take any dominant chord resolving somewhere. Instead of asking "what scale fits?", grab the upper structure of the target chord and play it from a half step above, letting it fall into place at the resolution. Chromatic gravity does the rest: every note in the approaching shape is a leading tone into a chord tone, which is precisely why those notes sound "altered" against the dominant. The tension isn't decoration — it's the next chord announced early from a semitone away. One shape, one move, complete resolution. Why is this better than learning the altered scale?
Because the altered scale answers "which notes are allowed?" while the half-step approach answers "where is this going?" — and only the second question produces music. Consider what each hands you in the moment of playing:
Scale thinking: seven notes, no built-in order, no destination — you still have to invent a line.
Upper-structure thinking: a shape you can already play, a direction (down a half step), and a guaranteed landing on chord tones.
Visibility: the resolution is drawn on the instrument as motion between two shapes, so your eye and ear agree.

What are common-tone lines, and why do they matter here?
A common-tone line is a single sustained thread — one note held or repeated while the harmony moves around it — and its mirror twins, the ascending and descending lines that climb stepwise through an entire progression. There are seven of them in a standard's harmony, and drilling them is the practice that separates intermediate players from advanced ones: it forces you to hear what stays constant while chords change, which is the exact skill the half-step approach depends on. It's demanding to practice alone, which is why almost nobody does it — but even just listening to the lines played through the changes is real ear training. Once these threads are in your ear, altered resolutions stop sounding exotic; they sound inevitable.
Where does diminished fit into this system?
Diminished is the same idea wearing symmetry. Because a diminished chord repeats in minor thirds, one shape carries four identities — and each identity resolves somewhere different. Treat it like the half-step approach: not a scale to run, but a set of resolutions to hear and see, one at a time.
