Fundamental
The private curriculum behind VoiceLid Jazz Guitar.

You can play the changes. You can name the modes.
But your solos still don't sound like music.
Not a course you watch — a system you're brought into, after a trial session.
From the video that brought you here:
Why Most Berklee Grads Can’t Actually Play Jazz
This video makes one argument. Fundamental is that argument, organized as a curriculum.
A QUIET MARKER
“Lately over the past few months I’ve seen so many YouTube instructors change their approach of getting course video material — and it’s mostly because of your videos.”
— Malik · Fundamental Bundle student
WHAT THIS IS
The core system behind my private-lesson curriculum.
Most jazz guitar practice fails for one reason: you're collecting information, not building a system.
Fundamental is the same curriculum I teach in private lessons during the first three months — organized as a structured path through melody, harmony, and fretboard movement.
Serious inquiry only
Enrollment opens after a required 30-minute trial session. Pricing is decided there, not advertised here.
WHO THIS IS FOR
(Read these slowly.)
This is for you if…
You've studied scales, voicings, and theory, but your playing still sounds mechanical.
You feel lost when the progression moves, even though you "know the chords."
You want a system that connects melody → harmony → improvisation — not more scattered tips.
You want to build real repertoire and play tunes with confidence.
This is not for you if…
You want licks to memorize, or quick hacks without building fundamentals.
You're not willing to practice in a structured order.
If that describes you better, Building Blocks (free) is a more honest starting point. Or simply not this curriculum.
FROM CURRENT STUDENTS
(Selected notes — not a testimonial wall.)
“Discovered VoiceLid Jazz Guitar yesterday on YouTube and was very excited about the prospect of developing horizontal improvisation on the fretboard. I’ve been playing jazz for over 30 years, but I’m happy to explore this topic further.”
ON THE QUESTION OF ADVANCED PLAYERS —
ON THE QUESTION OF THE METHOD'S DIFFERENCE —
“You have a great teaching methodology that’s different from most out there. And are an exceptional player with great training!”
ON WES AND DJANGO LINE ANALYSIS —
“Your clarification of the functional roles of the Wes and Django lines was very insightful and helped me understand the underlying concept much better. With that perspective, Four on Six now makes sense to me primarily as an application of these ideas rather than isolated material.”
“I finished Fundamental 1 Wes Diagonal sys. Of course it’s still a work in progress so i make this my warm up before doing anything else... I’ve watched several videos and believe it or not I’m understanding what’s going on but i have no material to refer to.””
ON FINISHING THE PATH —
“The clip showing the ii-v-1 shells setting up Django/Wes lines was very helpful. It really helped clarify the concept of guide tones for tonic/non-tonic”
“PS, Wish I’d found you sooner. Could have saved me 50 years...””
“I don’t think people realize the massive amount of great content in your lessons. I have to watch them over and over... I know how good of a thing you are teaching and I really appreciate it.””
“No one on the internet has explained voice leading triads as clearly as you have. Thank you so much for making a huge difference in my guitar journey.”
“I really love your YouTube content and your approach to the fretboard. You are a fantastic musician and I believe learning from your perspective will be a big help to me.”
THE CORE IDEA
fretboard becomes readable
Most players try to solve jazz by memorizing more: more scales, more positions, more voicings.
The SHIFT happens when you change your frame:
You hear function (tonic vs non-tonic).
You follow voice-leading and direction.
Your fretboard starts to feel like one connected language.
the same functional harmony jazz has always used — applied to the way the guitar is laid out.
THE THREE STAGES
Fundamental 1 — Wes’ Diagonal System (Four on Six)
Where you learn to follow a real jazz line on the guitar. The fretboard starts to feel connected — not like isolated shapes.
FUNDAMENTAL 2 — HOW LEARNING TUNES BECOMES MELODIC SOLOING (FLY ME TO THE MOON)
Where tune learning becomes a soloing path: melody → framework → chord melody → solo connection.
FUNDAMENTAL 3 — RUSSELL MALONE ANALYSIS
Where the logic of F1 and F2 shows up in an actual jazz guitarist's language.
CHORD MELODY
why Fundamental 1 comes first
Chord melody is taught in Fundamental 2.
But chord melody does not work as a complete system unless you can follow the line first.
Without that, it becomes disconnected shapes — not music.
That’s why the starting point is Fundamental 1.
The Bundle
The Fundamental Bundle is built like the apprenticeship system at the great jazz programs — lessons, practice, and review with the teacher.
The same structure I use in private 1:1 teaching, applied to a self-paced format.
Built around three model texts: Four on Six. Fly Me to the Moon. Russell Malone solo.
The starting point — and the structure — is calibrated in the trial.
THE TRIAL
30 minutes. Required. Not a free lesson — a short diagnosis session.
In the trial we will:
Clarify your current sticking point.
Confirm your best starting point inside the system.
Decide whether Fundamental is the right path.
